Course Description

In this advanced composition course, students will learn the strategies for analyzing and developing the argumentative research essay. Through reading, writing, research, and discussion, students will apply the skills of logical analysis and critical thinking in determining the effectiveness of an argument’s thesis and supporting ideas. They will develop advanced research skills in evaluating print and electronic resources and will apply those skills to their thesis-driven argumentative research essay. 

Course Objectives: Upon successful completion of this course, students should be able to 

  1. synthesize ideas to formulate research questions and theses. (Critical Thinking and Information Literacy)
  2. select appropriate investigative research methods for accessing information. (Critical Thinking & Information Literacy)
  3. recognize the elements of argumentative discourse which may include claims, warrants, assumptions, logical fallacies, and methods of reasoning. (Knowledge, Communication, Professional Competency)
  4. develop evaluative criteria for assessing the quality and relevance of resources. (Critical Thinking and Information Literacy)
  5. recognize the interaction between the writer, the text, and the reader in creating meaning. (Knowledge, Communication, Social Responsibility)
  6. develop an argumentative essay that demonstrates an understanding of research strategies and logical reasoning. (Critical Thinking & Information Literacy, Communication) 
  7. apply the conventions of MLA style of source documentation. (Knowledge, Ethical Behavior)
